Bali fears for its cultural heritage as tourists flood into Indonesia, The Guardian

  • People laughed when the Indonesian minister of culture and tourism bragged at the start of theglobal recession that tourists would soon be flocking to Bali to escape the stress. 
  • But Jero Wacik was right. The travel trade in Indonesia is booming and 2010 promises to be a record year.
  •  Tourism is the third-largest source of foreign currency and a big source of jobs.
  • In 2009 the number of Chinese visitors reached 204,000 (up from 50,000 three years earlier).
  • "Bali has always been trendy, but it has had a spectacular boom in the last two years," says Ngurah Wijaya, head of its tourist board. 
  • "Are we going to become another Ibiza? We don't need millions of visitors or all these hotel rooms going up all the time.
